Dr Mano Manoharan
I am a Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist based in London with over 12 years of consultant experience and a passion for improving maternal mental health, education, leadership and international collaboration. I currently work as a Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLAM) and as an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King’s College London. I also provide private consultations through Maudsley Private Care and my independent practice, Mony’s Perinatal Psychiatry.
After graduating in medicine in India, I completed my postgraduate psychiatric training through the prestigious Maudsley Training Scheme in London and obtained a Master’s degree in Psychiatric Research from University College London (UCL).
My clinical interests include perinatal psychiatry, ADHD in women, trauma-informed care, and the promotion of equitable access to mental healthcare. Alongside clinical practice, I am actively involved in teaching, research and service development. I have authored and contributed to publications in journals including The BMJ, BJPsych Advances and The Lancet, and served as the Principal Investigator for the South London and Maudsley/IoPPN site for the Melodies for Mums randomised controlled trial.
Within the Royal College of Psychiatrists, I currently serve as Joint Academic Secretary and Equity Champion for the Faculty of Perinatal Psychiatry. I am also a CASC examiner for the Royal College and an OSCE examiner, and I enjoy supporting the next generation of psychiatrists through teaching, mentoring and leadership development.
As Vice President of the British Indian Psychiatric Association (BIPA), I am passionate about strengthening academic collaboration, promoting diversity and inclusion, supporting colleagues at every stage of their careers, and building international partnerships that improve mental healthcare globally. I have a particular interest in developing educational initiatives in perinatal and infant mental health for low- and middle-income countries through collaboration with national and international organisations.
Outside medicine, I enjoy dancing, long-distance running, reading and spending quality time with my family. I have also enjoyed participating in pageantry and advocacy, being crowned Mrs India Universe Vivacious 2017 and receiving the IIW She Inspires Award at the UK Houses of Parliament in 2018. I believe that compassion, curiosity and collaboration are at the heart of effective leadership, and I am committed to using these values to serve both my patients and the wider psychiatric community.
